Ball of the century?
Mitchell Starc's appreciation society was led by Wasim Akram on Twitter during the third Ashes Test in Perth. There was a meltdown on social media, and for good reason. Not for much else, but perhaps, just perhaps, given that Mitchell Starc might have bowled what could be coined as the ball of the 21st century.
"I'd get out every time to that ball," said England batsman James Vince, who was undone by the ball of the Australian summer. The magic ball was bowled on the fourth day at the WACA that left him astounded. The batsman up until that point was batting seamlessly notching up a half-century even, but when it came, he had no answer.
The delivery moved 42 centimetres off the surface, pitching on the middle and leg stump, but then turned sharply towards off, only to castle Vince and leave England with little chance of surviving the final day's play. England were eventually beaten by an innings and 41 runs.
Shane Warne, who famously bowled what was the ball of the century to Mike Gatting, asked his followers if that was the ball of the 21st century. And received support from England great Michael Vaughan's response: "You could argue it's the ball of the 21st century."
